Huge thanks to Dan Short for dedicating an evening to the half-dozen or so attendees. After an hour long demo based around creating a logo, Dan fielded questions, both about best practice and technical tips. He even went so far as to provide some AfterEffects ideas/resources like motionographer.com.
At the request of the attendees, Dan has shared the source files for his demo. They’re freely downloadable below!

Also, based on the positive responses from the attendees, we’d love to get Dan back to run another workshop. What would you like to see? Leave us your ideas in the comments, and we’ll follow up with a poll!

Next Wednesday, July 30th Dan Short will be sharing his extensive knowledge of Adobe After Effects! This return of our workshop series from the spring is very exciting, and will be the first of lots of new events we’re getting fired up for this fall.
The event will run from 6:30-9pm. Please RSVP on Upcoming so we can have a headcount!
From Dan:
This tutorial is meant to introduce users who are already familiar with Adobe applications to After Effects, although I am sure that there will be elements that would be valuable to anyone interested in the program. I will be showing how to animate a logo over a background using 3D space, cameras, keyframing, with pixel and vector graphics. I know it sounds like a mouthful, but I’ll be breaking it down and doing my best to answer any questions you might have. If it sounds over complicated, don’t panic. I am a nerd at heart, and it is in our nature to make things seem more complicated than they actually are.
This “Logo” type of demonstration is a common introduction into After Effects because it incorporates so many of the programs abilities. If this session is received well, I will build more tutorials based on the specific needs and wants of the Indy Hall community. I look forward to seeing you there.
If anyone would like to get a familiarity with the program before the tutorial, or would like to work along with me, I will be supplying my files to anyone interested. You can also download a demo version of the program from the Adobe site.

Lots of exciting events are going on down between now and the end of the month! Some things you should be aware of (all of which you can find on our iCal as well):
July 17th - IndyHall Member Poker Night presented by Johnny Bilotta and Dave Speers. This is limited to 16 members first come first serve. If you want to attend and aren’t an IndyHall member yet, you can either join us, or find a member to bring you as their guest. Each member player get’s one guest. Thanks to TwoGuysOnBeer and Phillypreneurs for hooking this up! RSVP on Upcoming is required.
July 24th - Junto- This month’s topic is the open source beer project. As always, P’unk Ave provides beer and tomato pie. You provide your ideas and willingness to engage. Doors at 6:30, conversation at 7pm. Also, be sure to follow www.twitter.com/thejunto for future updates.
July 26th - Fail Camp is fast approaching! What the heck is Failcamp? It’s an event where you admit to your mistakes in business and in life with the hopes that others can learn from them. Co-organizer Amy Hoy has a much better description in her recent post to the Failcamp google group. We’re filling up fast so please RSVP on Upcoming.
July 30th - Workshops are back! We will be holding a workshop on the motion effects program After Effects from 6:30- 8:30pm at IndyHall. The presentation will be given by Dan Short. We hope that, like our previous workshops, this provides practical insight into how an industy professional uses a tool. We encourage students and professionals alike to attend!
ALSO!
Movie Nights will be finally starting in August. The concensus has been that they will take place on a thursday and since those are already booked up this month, we need to move it along to August. We’re kicking things off with one of your favorite cheesy 80’s movies, and for the next run, we’ll be embracing a new opportunity to work with Independent Exposure, a Houston based touring independent film circuit.
So stay tuned, and while you do, vote on the next movie:
