IndyHall Night Shift – Coming Soon!

Filed under: Announcements, From the Business Side, Independents Hall, coworking

nightshiftOne of the challenges of IndyHall is access control. We’ve known it from the start, and have done our best to be flexible making concessions to the wide range of hours that people get their work done.

We’ve also juggled two different sets of priorities for evenings: we’ve been able to host a myriad of evening events, providing an event venue for budding user groups and some of our own programming as well.

We recognize that things are changing for a lot of people: with jobs at risk, moonlighting and side projects are on the rise. And for those recently, um, “liberated” from their jobs: we look at this as an opportunity to congratulate you on your newfound freedom and welcome you to work as a member of the IndyHall community to make this transition a little bit softer. There are lots of super smart people that work here, and the culture of helping one another succeed is strong. We want to embrace that.

We’re going to try something new, starting in February. We’re lowering the priority of using the space for events in the evenings and instead, working towards a sustainable model that allows people to work after hours. We’re going to be starting one or two nights a week, and then adding a weekend day of availability as well. These days will be scheduled ahead of time, for convenience of making sure we have someone here to open the door and for the convenience of members.

Our plan is to add a night shift from 6pm-10pm at a reduced rate, made available on a pre-purchased punch card. This saves us the trouble of having money exchange hands after hours, and saves you the trouble of carrying cash. Easy peasy, that’s the plan.

We’re going to remain agile with this model, as we do with everything, and make it work as best as we can. We can only get better if you tell us how.

Our hope is to fire this program up for the first week of February (oh, that’s next week? We better get moving!), so please stay tuned. If you have any ideas or feedback, please let us know in the comments!

Scene But Not Nerd

The geek shall inherit the earth

IndyHall and a number of other (but hardly all) of the members of the fabulous geek scene we’ve been a part of over the last 2 years got a really great FRONT PAGE feature in this week’s Philadelphia Weekly. The author, Steven Wells, did a great job capturing some of the diversity that makes Philly’s geek scene totally kick ass. There are some great quotes from Geoff and I, as well as a comparison to a sage Yoda and an impulsive Luke Skywalker. I don’t think anyone’s ever pinned Geoff and I so well.

It’s on newsstands around Philly all week, so if you want a hard copy grab yours now.

Thanks again to everyone who’s contributed to, led, supported, and cheered along with us over the last couple of years.

Geeks rock, and Philly geeks rock hard. Congrats Philly.

New Year = New Desk Arrangement at IndyHall

For the last 8 months or so, we’ve had a layout on the main floor of the IndyHall workspace that somewhat segregated full time members from basic and lite/dropin desks. The full timers were all along the wall, while the loose desks were clustered around some structural poles.

This morning, to welcome the new year, we’ve arranged in a new layout that is designed to mix things up: full time desks and loose desks are now integrated and mixed up! We hope that this gives our less frequent members a chance to interact more with full time members, and vice versa. Can desk arrangements encourage collaboration? We think so at IndyHall!

Come join us and help with the experiment. Whether you’re already a member or not, use our reservation system to set aside a desk sometime this month and come hang out with the IndyHall coworking crew.

And Happy New Year!
